A Turken, otherwise know as a naked neck chicken is all chicken. They are named Turken's because they look like they have a Turkey's head. Come see how unique and differently built the Turken is in comparison to the Bantam Chickens.

This morning when we arrived at the library, we had 7 cute chicks waiting for us in the incubator!

We now have a total of 9 baby chicks!

Please stop by and see our little ones! They are so cute and each unique in their different colors!

By the end of Wednesday we had fourteen baby chicks! They are all very CUTE!

The baby chick called Saturday made their first pip hole in the egg on Friday afternoon. Saturday hatched on Saturday morning at 8:40 a.m.

A CHICK HAS HATCHED!!!

We have a little black baby chick that was born this morning, Saturday, April 24th at 8:40 a.m.

Yesterday I was in our YouthServices Workroom at 4 p.m. and I heard peeping! I went over to the incubator and saw that Egg #5 had made their first pip in the egg! A pip is a tiny crack where they start to break their egg shell to hatch. We were all very surprised to see that a chick could be starting to hatch on Day 17. I googled on the Internet to see if this has happened to people before that a chick could hatch before their 21 days of growth and I found that our breed of chickens that we are hatching "Bantam Chickens" can begin to hatch as early as Day 18! WOW!!!

I went to the store and bought some "gauze bandages aka.cheesecloth" to help cushion the chicks when they hatched. Many of us stayed to help on Friday night to take out the automatic turner 1 day early. We took out the turner, added sponges to the water tray for more moisture, put the gauze bandages down over the wire rack, and carefully laid the eggs on the gauze so that they can hatch.

This morning at 8:40 our first chick was born....4 days early!

Our Hannah Montana club attendees were the first to see our new baby chick!

We named our first chick #5 Saturday after a children's book titled

A Chick Called Saturday

written by Joyce Dunbar illustrated by Brita Granstrom

Today we unpacked the new incubator. We are getting so eggcited to begin the incubation project! We have only 1 more week to wait until we set the eggs in the incubator.

CHICK-IT-OUT this Spring!

Welcome Back to the Chick-It-Out Website!

During the month of April,
the Youth Services Department will be incubating chicken eggs!
Last year this “Eggciting Eggtivity” was so popular
that we decided to do it again!
Join us every day from
April 7 thru late May, 3:30 -4:30 p.m.
to check on the chicks’ daily development.
Children can make a
craft and join an activity each day
that helps them learn about the chicks.
Baby chicks will begin to hatch on
April 27 and 28.
You can also keep up-to-date on the chicks’ progress at home by going to

In late May, the chicks leave for their new home

We are very busy planning for our gardening & worm projects!

The gardening & worm activities will begin to take place every afternoon starting @ 3:30 p.m. and ending at 4:30 p.m. starting Saturday, May 9th. We will offer a story, craft, or activity everyday just as we did for our month of April with our baby chicks!

We have had over 812 people come to the crafts & activities between April 1st & May 2nd! That does not include all of the people that have dropped in at other times to see the baby chicks! We thank everyone in the community for making the Chick - It - Out project successful!

Adults & children will have the opportunity to hold a chick, get their picture taken with a chick, make a chick craft, have a chick snack, and watch a chick movie.

Chicklet & Jelly Bean Guessing Contest!
We hope that you will stop by the library to see the cute, fluffy, baby chicks!

We have a variety of breeds that are all different colors!

Some look like chipmunks, a penguin, brown, reddish, black, yellow & more!

The baby chicks will be here until Friday, May 8th @ 3:00 p.m.

At 12:10 p.m. the first baby chick (#16) hatched followed closely by baby chick (#10) at 12:15 p.m.

Brooder box set-up

The baby chicks will need a new home after they hatch.

When they first hatch they will be wet & sticky.

They will stay in the incubator until they begin to fluff up.

After they fluff up, we will move them to their new home.

The new home is called a brooder box.

It will supply them with heat, food, & water.

Below is a video of how to set-up a brooder box.

First- find a box.

Next - we chose to cut a window in the front of the box to provide a viewing window.We want to thank Home Depot for supplying the library with a piece of plexiglass & cutting tool to build the brooder box.
Third- we put down some bedding for the chicks to make them comfortable. (we used hamster shavings but we will use cut up newspapers in the future)
Fourth- we added a water source, a food source, and a heat source.

Day 18 - Taking out the Automatic Egg Turner

On Saturday, we took out the automatic egg turner. The eggs no longer need to be turned after day 18. We will now prepare the incubator for the hatching of the baby chicks.

Open the incubator
Take the eggs out of the automatic egg turner and place them carefully in the egg cartons that they arrived in.
Unplug and take out the automatic egg turner.
Place a layer of cheese cloth (like a very thin paper towel) and place over the wire rack.
Add sponges to the bottom channels of the incubator to increase moisture. Fill with water.
Place the eggs back on to the cheese cloth. The eggs will now rest on their sides.
Close up the incubator.
Remove the red vent plug from the top.

Peep Diorama

Peep Diorama Contest

You've been planning and now the time has arrived!
Please drop off your Peep Diorama this week
April 20th - April 25th
ALL AGES CONTEST
We hope everyone will join the fun!

What eggsactly is a diorama?

Dictionary.com defines a diorama as:

a scene, often in miniature, reproduced in three dimensions by placing objects, figures, etc., in front of a painted background.

How to make your own Peep Diorama

Step 1: Buy a package of Peeps or visit http://www.marshmallowpeeps.com/
to print out a picture of a Peep.

Step 2: Find a shoebox, a small box, or a small container
to decorate.

I chose a shoebox to use for my diorama.

Step 3: Decorate the outside of your container.
Be creative...You can use construction paper,
crayons, markers, paint... Be sure to protect your
workspace with newspaper when using messy art supplies.

Step 4: Decorate the inside of your container.
I chose to color the inside pink & silver.

Step 5: Add some decoration to the container.
I chose to use glitter glue, stars, regular glue,
and a stamper. These items can be found at the
Dollar Store, Walmart, Target, grocery stores,
or office supply stores.

I used the glitter glue and star stamp to
decorate the inside of my container.

Step 6: Find some supplies in your house
that you can use to decorate the inside of the diorama.
I used the aluminum foil to create microphones,
the brown string to hang the decorations from the
ceiling of the shoebox, and yellow yarn for my Peep's hair.

Step 7: Use construction paper to create objects
for your diorama.
Be careful when using scissors...ask an adult for help.
I chose to cut out a black guitar for my diorama.
I colored the guitar with crayons.

Step 8: Time to decorate your Peep.
You can leave the Peep as it is or you can add something to it.

I chose to use glue and toothpicks to make my Peep stand up by using 4 Peeps. One for the head, one for each leg (2), and one pulled in half for the arms. It does get a bit sticky taking apart the Peeps and gluing them. I used the toothpicks to connect all of the Peeps together.

Next, I made a big microphone out of a picture
clip holder and some aluminum foil.
Use your imagination to create items for your diorama.

Step 9: Now it is time to add your creations to your container. I hung circle stars from the ceiling of my box using string and tape. Then I placed my big microphone on the stage.

Step 10: Add your Peeps to your container. I used two purple Peeps with aluminum foil microphones as the back up singers for my diorama.

Next, I added my Hannah Montana "Hannah Peeptana" to my diorama.

I hope that you had as much fun making your Peep Diorama as I did! We can't wait to see your Peep Diorama at the library.
Remember to be creative. You can use any idea for decorating your diorama. Some ideas are book characters, sports, tv shows, favorite hobbies, chickens or anything!

Inside the incubator we have a thermometer that helps us to keep track of the temperature. It is located at the back of the incubator. The temperature must always stay at 99 or 100 degrees.

Ms. Irene labeled the eggs with a pencil. I had to write very lightly so that the eggs didn't crack. I put numbers on top of the eggs so that we can keep track of which eggs have baby chicks growing inside. We have 38 eggs. There is also an X on one side of the egg and an O on the other side of the egg. This helps us to see if the eggs are being turned. The eggs need to be turned at least 3 times a day. The eggs need to be turned so that the baby chicks do not stick to one side of the egg. We are very lucky, we have a yellow automatic egg turner inside our incubator that turns the eggs for us. It gently rocks the eggs back and forth. Sometimes when you see the eggs you will see them tilted towards the window, othertimes you will see them sitting straight up, and othertimes you will see them tilted toward the clock in the Youth Services workroom. In the video clip, I am gently placing the eggs into the yellow cutout circles in the automatic turner.
